A look at the Wyndham Championship

This week’s Wyndham Championship is the last chance for anyone below 125th in the FedEx Cup points race to get into the season’s final four events and have a chance at the big money. If you’re in the top 50 in points, this is a great chance to relax those shoulder muscles for a few days before the big push. And sure enough, that’s what they’re doing – only nine of the top 50 players are entered in the Wyndham. We have one of them, Webb Simpson, as our Hawley Ratings favorite this week. Simpson was the winner here in 2011 and gets the nod largely because of his record in the event. In addition to the win, he’s made the top 10 four other times in the last eight years, including threein a row, 2013-’15. Also Simpson has been playing much better recently than Bill Haas and Kevin Kisner, who are other logical choices. Kisner, of course, is the guy who got run over by a steamroller named Justin Thomas in the last round of the PGA Championship last week.

The only player in the field who’s doing much better than Simpson recently is Henrik Stenson. Stenson was 11th in the British Open, in the top 20 at the Bridgestone, and 13th in the PGA. Also Stenson is no. 1 by a significant margin in his statistical fit for the course per the Hawley course fit statistics. (Driving accuracy and greens in regulation are the top statistics in correlation with success at the Sedgefield CC.) The other side of the coin is that Stenson has a WD and two missed cuts in three appearances in the event since 2010. Also playing well recently is James Hahn, running a little bit under the radar; he was in the top 10 in the Canadian and top 15 in the PGA.

If you’re wondering about motivation, among those currently ranked 115th through 150th, a few who have been playing well lately include Smylie Kaufman, Shane Lowry, Ben Martin, Seamus Power, and Ryan Palmer. Martin and Power are above the cutoff line as they tee off, the others are below.

In addition to Hahn and Stenson, some players who have been pushing their Hawley Rating upward in the last month or two include Keegan Bradley, CT Pan, Rory Sabbatini, Robert Streb, and Chris Stroud.
