A look at the Northern Trust

The FedEx Cup series opens this week with no one dominant player capturing most of the attention. We’re going with Dustin Johnson as the favorite in the Northern Trust event because he’s no. 1 in the world and because he is somewhat quietly regaining the form that was so dominant from February through May. The last three times out, Johnson has been eighth in the Canadian, top-20 in the Bridgestone, and top-15 in the PGA.

Not that Johnson is the only one for whom things are looking up. Brooks Koepka has been outstanding recently, with no missed cuts since March and most of his performances on the high end. Witness his U.S. Open win, sixth-place finish in the British Open, and top-15 in the PGA. Not far behind is Hideki Matsuyama, the FedEx Cup points leadercoming in to the Northern Trust. He went top-15 in the British, won the Bridgestone, and was fifth in the PGA. The list of others with strong recent form is extensive – include Paul Casey, Rickie Fowler, Charley Hoffman, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman, Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, and Henrik Stenson. Matsuyama and Casey are the top two if you look at all results over the last five months.

The Northern Trust will be played at the Glen Oaks Club on Long Island, about 15 miles east of the Hudson. This is the PGA Tour’s first visit to that venue, so it is anyone’s guess what style of play will be most conducive to success there. The club has been around for decades but the current look dates to a renovation that was completed in 2014. Club head pro Tim Shifflett recently told the New York Post, “We feel that very manicured, elegant look, that’s what was best for us.” In other words, maybe not a bomber’s paradise.

If you’re thinking about a longshot, a guy from down the list who is playing well lately is Tour veteran Rory Sabbatini. He was fourth last week in the Wyndham and hasn’t missed a cut in six events since June. Three others likely to be overlooked are JJ Henry, Tyrone van Aswegen, and Camilo Villegas. Henry and Villegas made the top 20 at the Wyndham, and Villegas has made four straight cuts.
