Here are two important things to know about this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro NC:

• This is Webb Simpson, country.
• This is the last week for Tour players to move into the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings and thus qualify for the upcoming series of three FedEx Cup events, and, more importantly, become fully exempt for next year’s PGA Tour.

Simpson, the second pick based on the Hawley Ratings data analysis, has a record that is little short of fantastic in this event. Simpson, a North Carolina native and Charlotte resident, missed the cut in 2009, his first appearance in the event. In the 12 years since then, he has won once (2011), finished second twice, finished third twice, finished in the top 10 an additional four times, and made the cut the other two times. Currently he is working on a streak of four years in a row with finishes of second or third.

The computer pick is Louis Oosthuizen, who at age 38 is experiencing the most extended period of high-level success in his career. Since late April, he has nine appearances and has finished second four times, including two majors, the U.S. Open and PGA. In PGA Tour events, he’s been in the top 20 eight out of eight tries.

Here’s a list of guys on or near the bubble for FedEx Cup status:

Names that catch your eye might include Bo Hoag and Roger Sloan. Both are solid recently. Hoag is right on the top-125 cutoff line and needs at least a few points to stay on the good sign of that line. Sloan, a 34-year-old Canadian, is finishing strong with five straight made cuts, including a top-20 and top-10 (Barracuda) in his last two appearances. Sloan probably needs something close to another top-10 to make it.

Some other players of note include Hideki Matsuyama, Mito Pereira, and Hank Lebioda, Matsuyama was part of that big bronze-medal playoff in the Olympics and then returned to the U.S. to make it into another playoff at the WGC FedEx, where he again failed to win. Pereira is a 26-year-old Chilean who made his first PGA Tour cut in his fifth try last month. Since then he’s made four cuts in a row, including a streak of fifth-sixth-fourth in the Barbasol, 3M, and Olympics. Lebioda came into the 3M on a similar streak of three straight top-10s, then withdrew after the second round due to a family medical emergency in Florida involving his father.

The event venue, the Sedgefield Country Club, is a Donald Ross design dating to 1926. It’s has been the site of the event for the last 14 years. The top100golfcourses.com website quotes Daniel Wexler in his book The American Private Golf Club Guide as saying, “Routed over a rolling, wooded landscape, it is a strong, well-balanced test. Sedgefield serves as positive proof that a Golden Age design needn’t be mangled beyond recognition to remain tournament relevant in the new millennium.”
