Tom Hawley’s U.S./ Euro Rankings (Nov. 24, 2024)

Amateur Luke Clanton appears at no. 10 in this week’s Hawley Rankings with a ratings number of 1628. It’s the highest Hawley Rating number for any player debuting on the rankings this century, and 10th place is the second-highest position for a first-time player in the last 20 years.

A player must have a minimum of eight appearances in million-dollar or better events on major world tours to be eligible for the rankings. Clanton, a junior at Florida State who is likely to turn pro in June, finished in a tie for second in last week’s RSM Classic. The world no. 1 amateur had a chance to win, but a late bogey resulted in a runner-up finish. Since June, Clanton has eight starts on the PGA Tour; he’s made seven cuts, finished in the top 10 four times, and was also runner-up at the John Deere Classic.

The highest debut position on the rankings in the last 20 years is third by Hideki Matsuyama in August 2013. Matsuyama, who had already won in Asia, had top-10s in the 2013 U.S. Open and Open Championship and played his eighth qualifying event with a top-20 in the PGA.

Among players whose first appearance in the rankings was 25th or higher are Patrick Cantlay (13th/ 2017), JB Holmes (23rd/ 2006), Collin Morikawa (20th/ 2019), Jon Rahm (21st/ 2016), Henrik Stenson (23rd/ 2005), and Jhonattan Vegas (13th/ 2011).


Scottie Scheffler, whose one appearance since August was in the Presidents Cup, is no. 1 for the 80th straight week.
